Basics of Riding

How To Dismount Horse

Who is dismounting?

You are dismounting.

What is dismounting?

Getting off the horse.

Why am I dismounting?

Because you can’t stay on the horse for the rest of your life… Gosh!

Where am I dismounting?

Probably in an enclosed riding arena, because hopefully as you are a beginner, that is where you were riding.

When am I dismounting?

When your horse is standing still and your instructor tells you to dismount. Then there are… emergency dismounts… but we’ll save that for another day… another blog post.

How do I dismount?

I’ve made a video on YouTube a while back showing how to dismount. Don’t use a mounting block to dismount, I’ve seen things happen. Actually I’ve also experienced things happen and it ended with my butt on the ground and the horse sauntering off to eat some grass. Now that was a long time ago… when I was young and stupid… now I’m just older and a little less stupid. Okay just watch the video and hopefully learn something.

Watch Video Below

Some Pointers: Try not to kick your horse when you get off. Always run your stirrups up after, so if horse spooks the stirrups banging on their side don’t scare them further. Also in the barn the stirrups could get caught on hooks or other things.

I hope that video was helpful in teaching you how to dismount a horse.

Like I said for the mounting video, if you find that you encounter difficulties with dismounting please comment down below what issues you are having. I will be writing a blog post on problem solving for dismounting in the future.

Cheers & God Bless
